“Water Aid has been a very important stakeholder in this tempting time. I would tell you that hand washing stations were launched first in this district. When Covid-19 arrived in our country, the first thing we were told in the first meeting we had was to set up hand washing stations but we had already got three stations including one at the district’s office, one at Nemba border post and one at Nyamata hospital, all thanks to Water Aid,” said Mayor Mutabazi at a recent meeting with the organization.

Mr Mutabazi said Covid-19 first case in Rwanda was reported when the district had already conceived an idea of establishing hand washing stations in public venues as preventive measure against the Ebola epidemic.

For WaterAid, the mission is to help the district’s residents embrace sanitation as a way to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr Mbarushimana Jean Paul, the Chief Operations Officer at WaterAid –Rwanda, said “We will keep availing sanitation facilities to citizens in this fiscal year because these facilities are the basic needs in the fight against Covid-19. So, we attach so much value to them.”

Water Aid also delivered 1960 litres of liquid soap and 1040 litres of hand sanitizers which will be used for hand washing in health centres and other public venues.

Bugesera District’s Vice-Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs, Mrs Imanishimwe Yvette said Water Aid has been so close to the district in this time of Covid-19 and lauded this fiscal year’s action plan that WaterAid presented to the district about the rollout of sanitation facilities including setting up hand washing stations at school establishments in the district.

“We hope that these facilities will have been completed before schools reopen in September and help us raise the hand washing practice.

Water Aid is usually a partner with Bugesera District in the field of hygiene and sanitation and clean water access. This is accompanied by sensitizing citizens on sanitation through the media, an initiative that has been touted for its impact especially during the lockdown and more efforts have been called for to promote it.
